WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT ALPACA WOOL?

Alpaca fleece is soft, durable, and silky. The fibbers are similar in size to our Merino wool, but they are mostly hollow, whereas sheep’s wool has pockets of air. It is the air pockets that trap heat, so alpaca fleece can be perceived as being warmer than Merino. Alpaca fleece is also naturally water-repellent. Because it does not absorb water at all, it retains its warmth even when wet. This all makes sense; after all, alpacas are from the mountains of South America, where they have been bred for thousands of years. Their coats have to protect them from the cold and the elements! For those who may be sensitive to lanolin, which is naturally found in sheep’s wool, alpaca is a good alternative fibber. Like our Merino wool products, it is also non-flammable.
